Tracy & Lionel

We are Tracy and Lionel, a couple who love to photograph weddings. I have been a professional photographer since 2011 and shooting weddings since 2015. Tracy and I met in 2018 and we started shooting weddings together soon afterward. So when you book Lionel Mitchell Photography to photograph your Wedding in Northern Ireland, you get Tracy as well as Lionel. That’s two photographers, two angles, twice the moments, expressions, and all the little bits that matter. Four eyes on the detail instead of two!

Tracy’s interests lie in art history and classical music. She likes all that old Renaissance stuff, you know, the da Vinci, and Caravaggio brigade, and the Mozart’s and Beethoven’s of the world of classical composers. Myself, I would be more Roll Over Beethoven! That’s Chuck Berry 1956 originally. Though it’s actually the ELO version of the ’80s that I remember.

Obviously we both love our photography and when we are not working on anything else, we enjoy getting out for long walks together. You can always spot us. We are the ones hauling loads of photo gear around with us! No, I’m sorry, taking photos on our iPhones is not an option! Well, actually sometimes we do, but we also like to experiment and play with our cameras, the light, the movement and so on.

We love what we do, and we do it with a passion. We look forward to working with you.

For me, a photograph is all about time. It’s is the one thing we cannot hold onto, but a photograph captures a moment, a tangible slice of time that we can revisit for all time. That’s what I love about a photograph and why I love taking photographs. Photography, for me, is about creating timeless images and capturing memories of faces and places. Faces and places may change over time as children grow up, we all get older and places are developed, but the photograph will never change.

I have a keen interest in art, particularly the Renaissance period. It was then that artists began to capture the effects of light and shadow on different surfaces. This is just one of the aspects where I see a strong connection with photography. I am always on the lookout for ways in which to use the light to best effect in my photography.

I’m very proud to have recently achieved my Licentiate with the Royal Photographic Society. The Licentiate tests techniques and approach to photography. The process is demanding and requires dedication, but it is also very rewarding to have your work approved by a panel of experts.

Photography has genuinely been a lifelong hobby for me and now it’s my second career. It was in 2011 that I started working for Johnston Press as a freelance photographer in the Lurgan and Portadown areas. The experience I gained was invaluable in many respects; working under pressure, working in difficult conditions, and in getting the best from my subjects as well as my camera. My work was published in the Northern Ireland and Irish press as well as weekly at a local level.

I wanted to learn more about the art of photography. So back to college and for two years work took a back seat to learning. It was worthwhile. I achieved a Higher National Diploma in photography with Distinction, and apart from filling that art gap, it opened my mind to many influences that I was able to draw upon to develop my own photographic style. Along the way I achieved a couple of Northern Ireland Photographic Association (NIPA) awards, as well as a Licentiateship and an Associateship from the Royal Photographic Society, (RPS).

I was a general photographer having photographed a number of weddings and various other family photography jobs, etc. It was in 2019 however that I decided to focus on my strengths and specialise in Wedding Photography and Portraiture.
